Every year about 800 people in Lithuania decide to kill themselves. Unfortunately, Lithuania, with 32 suicides per 100 000 inhabitants, is registered by far the highest rate of suicide among the EU Member States, according to Eurostat. Suicide is a major public health problem that is frequently ignored. The government takes no action in preventing this problem, health organisations tend to highlight other problems like unplanned pregnancy and alcoholism. People do not like to talk about suicide in public, because of its deep Christian traditions – Catholics believe that suicide is a sin and priests often refuse to even bury a person who killed himself. People who decide to kill themselves often have depression. Our society tends to think that depression is not an illness and people who ,,are just feeling sad‘‘ do not need treatment. Depression is more than just a low mood – it's a serious condition that affects your physical and mental health. It‘s hard for healthy people to understand, that a person they love so much could not be happy living their life. A young student from Vilnius, who asked to stay anonymous, were friends with a person who had destructive, suicidal thoughts, told us : “ I didn‘t want to accept the fact that he‘s ill, maybe that was because the person talked about his illness as if it was nothing. Also, maybe I tried to deny the fact that my close friend doesn‘t want to be with me in this world.‘‘ This just shows that we have to help others – it is important to every suffering person and his family. All of the questioned people, who were asked how suicide should be prevented, suggested the same solution – learn to accept the fact that depression is a real sickness and suicide is a real threat to our society, then break the silence by talking about these problems, show people, that we care about each and every one, always try to help the ones you love the most, because if we wait, it can already be too late. An interviewed student also shared these thoughts : “First step is to stop ignoring yourself and how you feel. You have to realize, that you’re not feeling well and then try to tell others what you’re going through. We can only end our suffering by talking to the ones we love, so that these people could lead us to other people, who are qualified and can actually make us feel better. After all that, we have to speak about it even louder, tell others what happened to us and show everyone, that we had courage to deal with this problem. All we have to do is talk and then listen to what others have to say.”
